In this course, you’ll learn about the mindset behind inclusive design and the fundamentals of inclusion and accessibility.

We will share real-life examples and best practices in designing inclusive products, services, and experiences. You will leave with some practical tools you can use to identify and consider obstacles in your current and future services. 

Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone who wants to improve the inclusivity and accessibility of their services, products, and experiences. 

We look forward to welcoming people working in public services, business, and charities. The course has been designed to support people working in a wide range of roles including service delivery, management, and policy development.

We will help you to understand the importance of inclusivity and accessibility, learn practical service design techniques, and gain the skills to identify and address barriers.

You will be equipped to create more inclusive and accessible services that meet the needs of diverse user groups, leading to improved user satisfaction, and increased social impact.

You won’t leave with the skills to make everything inclusive and accessible for everyone – accessibility is a continuous journey involving multiple specialism. You will leave with an awareness of what inclusion and accessibility really mean in the context of services, products, and experiences, and a way to begin your inclusive design journey.

By the end of this course, you will have:

  • An understanding of the approach and mindset for inclusive design 
  • Identified areas and opportunities for development
  • Collaboratively developed ideas
  • A roadmap to begin your inclusive design journey

Course structure

The course takes place over two 6-hour classes which run from 10:00 until 16:00.

Session 1 - Understanding inclusive design and accessibility

We’ll introduce you to inclusive design and how the approach can be used to impact services, produces, and experiences.

You will cover the topic of accessibility, and begin to better understand the experiences of others and the barriers that might exist.

You will gain

  • A shift in your mindset to take a more inclusive approach.
  • An understanding of the importance of accessibility.
  • New ways of identifying the barriers that prevent people from accessing products and services effectively.

Session 2 - Developing and delivering inclusive practices

Reflecting and building on the previous session, you will learn how to use service design methods to understand the barriers that people face.

You will apply a variety of idea generation tools to start developing ideas to improve your current approach.

The course will end as you progress into project planning.

You will gain

  • Knowledge of some tools and methods for understanding the different needs of your users.
  • The skills and confidence to collaboratively develop ideas with others.
  • The ability to develop a roadmap to begin your inclusive design journey back in the workplace.

Teaching and assessment

This course is delivered live and online using Microsoft Teams. It is an interactive course delivered by service design experts who are highly experienced in training with a learn-by-doing approach. This course is taught in English.

This course is not assessed, but you will receive a digital certificate from the Service Design Academy.

We are the only organisation in the world accredited by the Service Design Network which means our courses are accredited by them. Your course certificate is accredited by SDA and the Service Design Network, a driver of global growth, development and innovation within the practice of service design.


You will need a computer with a fast and reliable connection to the internet, a camera, and a microphone.

To ensure the best possible experience for yourself and others, we recommend that your wear a headset to provide clarity of sound and improved live captions for those who use them.


We deliver our training using Microsoft Teams and Miro.

There is no requirement for you to install this software or create an account in advance of the course.

Although both tools are available as downloadable apps which may enhance your experience, each is available on the web without an account. We recommend that you use Google Chrome for the best experience.

We have designed this course to enable participation in multiple ways. This course is suitable for you whether you use Miro, are unable to use Miro, or prefer to take and share notes in a different way.

Fees and funding

£795.00 GBP

As a provider of education, we do not charge, and you do not pay VAT on our course fees.

Individual Training Account (ITA) funding

Skills Development Scotland can provide up to £200 to support the cost of this training.

ITA funding could be right for you if you meet the below eligibility criteria:

  • aged 16 or over and living in Scotland
  • not currently in education or involved with any other Skills Development Scotland (SDS) programme
  • unemployed and looking to get back into work or employed and earning £22,000 or less per year
